A third West Coast trip once again has us visiting Assynt. We have probably been to this region of the West Coast 15-20 times over that last 20 years, and are still coming across new and spectacular views that we don’t recall seeing before.

A second trip to the West Coast earlier this week. This time we headed to the North to Inverpolly, Assynt and Stoer. Over 30 years ago I spent a month living in a run down static caravan just outside Inchnadamph whilst doing geology mapping fieldwork. At the time I couldn’t wait to leave and didn’t appreciate the stunning scenery around me, how blind I was.

It has been many years since we last visited the West Coast of Scotland. For our first trip we headed to Wester Ross and the Torridon mountains. The weather turned out to be better than forecast and our visit was surprisingly Midge free which was an added bonus.

Kirkhill Stone Circle is located at the edge of Kirkhill Forest overlooking Aberdeen Airport and Dyce. There are ten standing stones in total with the two tallest located adjacent to a massive recumbent stone located on the southern flank of the circle. The circle is approximately fifteen metres in Diameter. Recumbent Stone Circles are unique to Aberdeenshire and are thought to be used as Calendars rather than burial sites.
